Our Story

Sports Marketing Australia (SMA) was formed in 1999 when the founding Directors combined their wealth of knowledge and relationships in the sports and entertainment industry to successfully implement commercially driven projects across regional Australia. The company’s strategic vision was based around the philosophical change in the sports and entertainment industry that involved decentralising events into regional Australia.

SMA now has more than 20 years of events placement experience and partners with 62 unique destinations across Australia and NZ, driving the visitor economy through sports, entertainment and cultural events. With strong industry relationships, SMA places more than 600 events every year, delivering economic and community benefits for our local government and destination partners.

Company Directors

Craig Gibson – Managing Director

Craig has been a Director of Sports Marketing Australia since 2004 and is at the heart of the company’s growth and success. Prior to joining SMA, Craig had more than 15 years’ experience working in a variety of key sports administration, event and facility management and commercial roles. One of Craig’s career highlights was working with the international promoter of Nitro Circus Live for over 10 years. Craig co-ordinated multi show, stadium tours across Australia, NZ, the UK, USA and Canada. While holding a Director position with SMA, for 12 years Craig was a casual lecturer at Southern Cross University in the School of Business and Tourism, teaching Special Event Management, Business Event Management and Sales and Promotions in Tourism and Hospitality. This role provided a unique opportunity to pass on professional experience and expertise to students, while also researching new event outcomes and directions within the sports, leisure and tourism industry.

Craig is passionate about all sports, but particularly soccer, water polo and swimming. When not working, he enjoys all the trappings of the beautiful Coffs Coast including surfing, boating and fishing with his family.

Jason Sleeman – Director

Jason joined Sports Marketing Australia in 2007 and has worked his way to a Director role, managing the events team and driving new business. Leading the events team, Jason has developed a unique skill set that involves a balance of leadership and hands on involvement in a fast paced environment.

Jason has an extensive relationship network of event owners across the world and uses this to drive new business with our local government and destination partners. Outside of work, Jason has a strong passion for water sports, such as fishing and surfing and follows the Manly Sea Eagles in the NRL.
