Townsville Hosts LAQ State Championships

Townsville hosted the Little Athletics Queensland (LAQ) McDonald’s State Championships from 24th – 26th March with more than 1,600 competitors and officials attending.

This is the pinnacle event in the LAQ calendar and the championships are a significant tourism attraction for the region due to mass participation. The event at Townsville Sports Precinct was held over three days with an expected economic benefit of more than $3,020,000 and 11,400 bed nights for the region.

This was the final, major competition in the calendar and athletes are registered from all corners of the State in the hope of becoming the next State Champion. The U13 State Team was selected at these Championships and performance of the U13’s plays a significant part in selection.

SMA’s Partnerships Manager, Steffan Jurd, said the Championships were a major event for Townsville. “This is a significant event with a large number of spectators,” Steffan said. “The junior age groups attract a higher number of accompanying partners with approximately 2,000-2,400.  There were approximately 3,800 people from outside the region and a total attendance of 4,000 which is great news for Townsville and the local economy.”
