Working with City of Gold Coast, SMA has supported the Oceania Hockey Federation (OHF) to deliver a Hook in4 Performance Camp preparing for the recent Pacific Games in Honiara in December and a Hockey 5s World Cup Qualification Tournament for the inaugural FIH Hockey 5s World Cup in Oman in January, 2024.
The Hockey5s Oceania Cup 2023 played out in the Gold Coast as Australia, New Zealand and Fiji secured the gold, silver and bronze medals respectively in both men’s and women’s competition. With the top-3 classification, all three teams across both genders qualified for the FIH Hockey5s World Cup for 2024.
A squad of 8 men’s and 8 women’s teams from the Pacific Islands including Fiji, PNG, Vanuatu, Tonga, Samoa and Solomon Islands and New Zealand and Australia attended the event for the Oceania region.
The camps and international matches were hosted by Gold Coast Hockey for 220 athletes over 5 days. The event was streamed through LiveHockey via Hockey Australia’s channel. Secretary General for the Oceania Hockey Federation, David Peebles, said these events were the first of many.
The facilities at the Commonwealth Games Hockey stadium and the Gold Coast Performance centre are first class and the experience lends itself to OHF positioning future events on the Gold Coast as Australia continues the path to Brisbane 2032.
