First Class Super Rugby in Regional NSW

Regional communities in Wagga Wagga City Council and Griffith City Council witnessed first class Super Rugby and Super W when the ACT Brumbies took on the NSW Waratahs in Griffith and the Melbourne Rebels in Wagga Wagga for pre-season fixtures.

The schedule saw community engagement activities and school visits across the entire region as the Brumbies travelled between Griffith and Wagga.

The historic game in Griffith was the first time the Brumbies had played at Exies Sports Club with the trial against the Waratahs doubling as Stephen Larkham’s side’s first look at their round one opposition. Scott Fava took charge of his first game as Super W head coach against the South Australian Black Falcons. Week two of the roadshow saw the Brumbies return to Wagga Wagga where the club hosted the Rebels in both men’s and women’s at McDonald’s Park.

ACT Brumbies CEO, Phil Thomson said it had been three years since they were able to bring trial games to regional NSW due to COVID.  “To genuinely connect with our community in Griffith, Wagga Wagga and the surrounding regions with these matches and the associated community engagement activities was something we were really excited about,” he said.

The SMA Grant Writing Team secured the much needed Government funding to pull the festival together. SMA assists event owners and LGAs with planning for similar events.
