Photo: The “Home of Table Tennis” initiative has been recognised with a major award.

Congratulations to Destination Gippsland and Latrobe City Council who won the prestigious Bunnings Trade Local Government Initiative of the Year for their innovative project: “The Home of Table Tennis – Latrobe City Council”.

Through the project, in 2023, over 800 players and families helped generate more than $400,000 to the local economy and by embracing a non-traditional sport, the initiative has pioneered a model for inclusive and dynamic community engagement in the Latrobe Valley. The long-term investment was strengthened with the construction of a storage facility for 60 new tables and equipment that is now accessible for local table tennis associations.

The was a first for regional Victoria and Latrobe City Council who signed the partnership agreement with Table Tennis Victoria and Destination Gippsland to host the Victorian Country Championships and the Victorian Open Championships in Traralgon for the next eight years.

The award recognises a Local Government Authority which made a significant contribution to sport through the development of a participation program or facility and the project was facilitated with the support of the team at Sports Marketing Australia.
