Australia is riding a wave of euphoria following our success at the recent Paris Olympic Games. Australia’s haul of 53 medals was the most ever won at an Olympic Games and the flow on effect is significant with communities across the country wanting to share that Olympic spirit.

The benefits, according to Sports Marketing Australia’s (SMA) Managing Director, Craig Gibson, are great – not only for athletes across all sporting disciplines but also for the wider community.

“Australia has been inspired by this success,” Craig said. “The team at SMA would like to congratulate all of the Australian athletes and National Sporting Organisations for their performances in Paris. Often, this level of success is directly linked back to a successful preparation campaign, including high performance training camps.”

In the lead up to the Paris Games, SMA placed 143 camps over two years in Australia attracting 12,918 athletes and 54,141 bed nights. Many of these camps were Olympic and Paralympic sports and 61% of these were international. Host regions benefited greatly from the camps, not only from an economic perspective but from a social and community perspective.

Craig said there will be more opportunities to get involved in the preparations for the next Olympics by hosting camps within our partnering regions over the next eight years. “Now is the time to build on Australia’s success and get set for the Olympic Games in LA in 2028 and then Brisbane in 2032”, he said.

“Enquiries from community members wanting to try Olympic sports is on the rise and sporting associations have reported record enquiries in recent weeks. Councils can take advantage of this excitement and help their communities to share that Olympic spirit.”
