SMA Meets Sports Leaders at ONOC General Assembly

SMA met with some of the leaders in international sport at the Oceania National Olympic Committee’s (ONOC) 43rd Annual General Assembly in Brisbane recently.

The week-long event was jointly coordinated by the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), as ONOC member and host, and the National Olympic Committee (NOC). The inaugural conference saw participation from 17 NOCs from Oceania (15 from the Pacific Island nations), five associate members, international and regional sports federations, host National Olympic and Paralympic committees, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Olympic Solidarity, ANOC, Commonwealth Sports and Commonwealth Games Australia, the Pacific Games Council, international and regional partners and agencies, South East Queensland academic institutions and many others.

AOC President, Ian Chesterman, said the committee was honoured to host their colleagues from ONOC and across the Oceania Region. The gathering provided an opportunity for the AOC to further strengthen its ties with its neighbours.

President of ONOC and President of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC), Dr. Robin Mitchell, said that the conference was an important forum to engage with leading high-performance experts, to build strong alliances and create key strategic actions to create the “Home Games Advantage” on the road to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games for Oceania.

‍SMA Director, Jason Sleeman, said the event was critical to forge new relationships and to work with the committees in their preparation for the games. “This provides SMA with opportunities to build relationships and place international, high-performance sports camps and training games in our regions as we get closer to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” he said.

“During 2022, SMA dedicated a full-time resource to build relationships with rights holders based across Oceania and Asia which has translated into lots of new opportunities for the Councils we partner with across Australia and New Zealand.”
