Wollongong will again host the National Youth Football Championships next month as the 2024 Boys’ tournament kicks-off with 32 teams and some of the best emerging talent from across Australia.
The 2024 National tournament takes place over six days from 16 – 21 July and includes the Under 15 and Under 16 age groups. The Championships will be held across three venues; WIN Stadium, JJ Kelly Park and Ian McLennan Park. The Girls’ tournament will be held at the Home of the Matildas, Bundoora, Victoria and will feature up to 22 teams from across Australia.
The event is the flagship youth championship on the Australian calendar with teams from Football Australia’s nine State and Territory Member Federations competing. The National Youth Championships are a crucial stepping-stone for young players with many of today’s Subway Socceroos and CommBank Matildas tracing their beginnings to the tournament.
Football Australia CEO, James Johnson, said the sport’s governing body was delighted to be returning to the Illawarra. “We would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to the NSW Government, Destination NSW, Wollongong City Council and Destination Wollongong for their ongoing support of Australian football and our elite pathways,” Mr Johnson said.
Destination Wollongong’s General Manager, Mark Sleigh, said the region was excited to welcome the nation’s most talented footballers back to Wollongong. “A proven pathways event for junior players, the Championships will showcase Wollongong’s premier football fields and seaside stadium and have a significant economic boost to the visitor economy during our winter season,” he said.
Football Australia has announced a broadcast arrangement with News Corp Australia’s streaming platform KommunityTV. Every game of the 2024 National Youth Championships will be streamed live.
