Elite netball returned to Bendigo in October as the Australian Diamonds faced the South Africa Proteas at Red Energy Arena — a collaboration that showcased the power of partnership in sport and destination promotion.
The event delivered benefits far beyond the court as SMA worked with Netball Australia and the City of Greater Bendigo to secure this world-class fixture. The event aligned the priorities of the sport, the community and the local economy.
Bendigo has a proud history with the Diamonds, with past matches drawing thousands of fans and generating significant economic impact, including nearly 1,800 hotel nights and $1 million into the local economy during last year’s England series.
This year’s match was broadcast internationally, putting Bendigo and Victoria on the global sporting stage.
Beyond ticket sales, the partnership supported the growth of netball participation, especially among young women, and delivered community engagement initiatives such as school clinics and high-performance camps. It was a perfect example of how events can drive sport development, community connection, and local tourism simultaneously.
SMA facilitated the partnership to deliver a global sport experience while lifting the local economy and inspiring the next generation of athletes.
Bendigo welcomed the Diamonds, and the community benefited every step of the way.
The Australian Diamonds won the game in Bendigo, defeating the South Africa Proteas 64 ‑ 53 and defeated the Proteas 65 – 42 in the third netball Test in Adelaide.
